We just left Prague and are en route to Florence. We have had quite an eventful trip so far with plenty of highs and lows. I’ll start with the negatives… my family is no longer meeting us in Italy, we have changed 2 flights and 3 train tickets, canceled our Budapest trip, and got in a car accident in Italy. I hurt my hand on impact, which has made traveling a little more complicated, but other than that everyone came out uninjured. Other than those minor setbacks, we had an amazing time in Italy.
We met Elliott’s parents and their friends from London (Alex & Denise and their son Matthew) at Alex & Denise’s home in the village of Pederobba. We had an amazing time visiting the nearby towns of Asolo, Bassano del Grappa, Feltre, and of course Venice. Their extended family lives in Pederobba and we spent the week with some of the nicest people I have ever met. They truly opened up their homes to us all. There was a serious amount of pasta, pizza, and prosecco involved.
We stayed in Pederobba for about 10 days after they all returned to London. Matt’s friends Roger & Kirstin, who are originally from London, have settled down in Pederobba, which was great because it meant we had English speaking friends to hang out with during our prolonged visit. We saw more of Italy, did a lot of relaxing, and tried to stay out of the 110-degree heat. We also went to the neighboring town of Valdobbiadene, which is the primary Prosecco producing region in Italy. It is amazing how the landowners have basically planted grapes on every square inch in the town.
We went to the greatest little spot at the top of the hill called Osteria Senza Oste, which essentially means “bar without a bartender”. It is basically just a few picnic tables in the middle of vineyards overlooking the entire town. There is a little mini-fridge built into the side of the mountain with all kinds of Prosecco, salami, cheese, etc. to make your own picnic. Payment is via the honor system in a box on your way out. Something like this would be ruined in the States in no time, but not here. Everyone has such respect, paying for what they consume, and being sure to keep the spot a secret. We were lucky enough to get there since Roger & Kirstin had been there before. And even then it was a bit tricky remembering exactly how to find it.
We left Pederobba on Monday and flew to Prague. We had a great time despite the short stay and hours spent in a Czech hospital making sure I had no broken bones. We walked the entire city and saw all of the sites. We spent our entire last evening in the Globe bookstore & café (Thanks Laur Laur!). They had such great food and a really inviting atmosphere. Not to mention the owner’s cute little puppy running around all over the place.
We will arrive in Florence early tomorrow morning. We will stay for 2 nights and then will be on our way to Cinque Terre, before catching a flight back to France next week. Pictures to come…
