It has been awhile since we’ve checked in, so we’ll catch everyone up on the past few weeks. Erik and Alyse came to visit at the middle/end of June for a few days and we had such a great time with them here in Biarritz. We also recently discovered this great hiking trail called Littoral that is about 30 kilometers long and spans from Biarritz to the coast of Spain. The trail is right on the Atlantic and goes through beautiful natural parks and beaches. It will be very missed when we leave.
We also just returned from visiting Belgium and The Netherlands. Today is Bastille Day here in France so there has been many a firework since our return last night. We took trains the entire way and stopped in Bruges for 2 days, Brussels for 2 days, and spent the remaining 3 days in Amsterdam. Bruges was a beautifully quaint little town full of narrow canals, horse drawn carriages, and old men playing bocce ball in the park. We visited the open-air markets, the chocolate museum, and the greatest little local brewery.
Brussels was nice to see, but it wasn’t much different than any other big city and it didn’t really have anything unique unto itself. We still had a great time walking the city, eating Belgian waffles, and seeing a movie in English! We then took a train to Amsterdam. We took trains this entire trip and it was so great that we did, not only because it is so easy to just hop on a train without security lines, etc, but also because these countries are so beautiful to see by train. Amsterdam was a great trip. We stayed at a B&B called Bloembed that was run by such a great couple. I highly recommend it if anyone ever finds themselves in Amsterdam. They were such nice people and the place was so great because it was just like having your own apartment for the weekend. It was so much better than a hotel. We went to the Anne Frank house, which was truly amazing to see in person, the Van Gogh Museum, and the Heineken Brewery, which was actually a really fun tour even though we’re not too big on their beer. The city itself was absolutely beautiful with cute little houseboats on the canals, flower lined streets, friendly locals, and millions and millions of bicycles. We spent ten hours on trains yesterday from Amsterdam to Biarritz with a station transfer in Paris, so we’re a little exhausted.
We have a couple of weeks here in Anglet before we leave for Italy. We might try to fit in a couple of days in Bordeaux before we leave. Elliott’s parents are visiting friends in Venice in the beginning of August and my family is coming to Italy in the beginning of September, so we are just going to stay in Italy the whole month of August and travel from there. We’re very excited…
